The story of Zanzibar and CCS

Cariboo Carbon Solutions (CCS) was established in 2020 as a subsidiary of Zanzibar Holdings. Zanzibar Holdings was founded by Tony Harrison and Gordon Saunders in 1980. Tony and Gords long friendship and dedication to their staff built Zanzibar into one of BC’s industry leaders in silviculture.

CCS was conceived as an expansion into implementing the many activities required to deliver large scale wildfire rehabilitation projects. The name of Cariboo Carbon Solutions originated from the work Zanzibar completed as a recipient under the Forest Carbon Initiative (FCI) to help reforest the 2017 Hanceville and Plateau fires within the Cariboo forest region for carbon sequestration (2018-2022). Most of the current staff at CCS were part of the Zanzibar team that was involved in the Cariboo FCI program.

CCS Staff vs Zanzibar Staff?

CCS is a small company of 17 staff, including: project managers (PMP), forest professionals (RPF/RFT), professionals in training (TFT/FIT), GIS technicians, and senior silviculture surveyors.

Zanzibar Holdings Ltd. is a company of 200 people, including: experienced project managers, tree planters, and silviculture surveyors.

How do CCS and Zanzibar interact?

CCS and Zanzibar are separate companies, but CCS was built from the strength of project origination and implementation developed on wildfire rehabilitation projects as Zanzibar. Zanzibar has always been known in the industry for its large workforce that produces a high quality product efficiently and fairly.

The two companies complement each other by collaborating and supporting one another when additional capacity is needed. CCS is able to utilize Zanzibar’s large seasonal workforce to scale field work quickly. Through Zanzibar, CCS has access to experienced tree planters, DTA and trail building, and silviculture surveyors. Often Zanzibar is already working within a region that CCS is operating during the spring-fall. Working together to schedule some of the same workers has its efficiencies.

Zanzibar is able to bring CCS staff into projects when professional oversight (RPF/RFT) or GIS services are needed. Zanzibar trains their own silviculture surveyors prior to their accreditation which contributes to their large skilled workforce.
